The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) is a statutory body with the power to investigate alleged miscarriages of justice in England, Wales, and Northern Island (Scotland has a different legal system). The CCRC was inaugurated under Section 8 of the Criminal Appeal Act 1995. As Jon Robbins has noted (Guilty Until Proven Innocent, Biteback Publishing, 2018), ‘the CCRC presently receives about 1, 500 a year, mainly from prisoners claiming there innocence.’ I can help you draft your application so that you present your case in the strongest light possible.
From April 2022 to March 2023, the CCRC received 1,424 applications with a backlog of 718 cases. 25 cases (2%) were subsequently referred to the Criminal Court of Appeal.
This data includes the high-profile conviction of Andrew Malkinson and seven cases involving the Horizon Post Office Scandal.
